Checklist of the birds of eastern Congo
including the Albertine Rift
By Tommy Pedersen

This checklist covers the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire).
The area covered starts in the south with Mt. Kabobo and Kalemie on the western shore of Lake Tanganyika, west through the Itombwe Mountains to Kindu, north to approx. Kisangani, Buta and the Uele district. The northern limit is the border with Sudan. The eastern limit is the border with Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and Tanzania.
A total of 996 species is known from this area, as of January 2000.
The systematic follows Voous as described in "A contribution to the
Distribution and Taxonomy of Afrotropical and Malagasy birds" by R.J.Dowsett &
F.Dowsett-Lemaire (1993) and "The Birds of Africa, Vol. 1 - 5" by Keith,
Urban & Fry. Where they differ I have decided myself who to follow, awaiting
volumes VI and VII of "BOA".
Names written in small letters are subspecies of the preceding species.
I am much indebted to Paul Herroelen in Belgium for his comments to this list, and his valuable information.
I started this checklist during my stay in Goma, and it was primarily meant as a checklist for personal use. It is now available on the internet, and I will update it regularly. The status of each species is very subjective, and will need further research. I have none the less included this to aid future birders in the area, but it should not be used for anything more scientific.
